Beer production in Russia officially began in 1796 when Catherine the Great signed a decree on the development of beer. Baltika brewery is the largest brewery in the Russian Federation. It is located in the town of St. Petersburg. The brewery was started in 1990 and the porter was brewed as their seasonal winter offering. In 1995 it was launched into production. The Russian s eat vobla (dried, very salty fish with the head intact), and baranki (rings of salty bread) with their beer. There is a concept in Russia, beer against alcoholism . Russians do not really consider beer an alcoholic drink, most likely because of the vast amounts of vodka consumed. Baltika porter pours like a ribbon of black silk brimming with a creamy dark tan head. The aroma is clean with a hint of spicy hops in the back leading to a smooth, big flavor full of roasted grains. It trails off dry and unassuming. This is an alluring porter which hides its alcohol deceptively.

This clone recipe was created in 2000.
