Gritty McDuff s opened its first brewpub in 1988 in the historic Old Port district of Portland, Maine. Being Maine s first brewpub since prohibition, Gritty s began the brewing renaissance in the state. The founders, Ed Stebbins and Richard Pfeffer wanted to have an English-style pub serving fresh ales and excellent pub fare. They were successful in doing both. .Gritty McDuff is a fictional character who s legend changes every year or so. No matter what year, Gritty was a humble, gentle, kind man, despite a perverse love of rugby. He could track, cook and most importantly brew beer better than any other. What better character to name a brew pub after? The yeast strain used for Gritty s beers is one developed centuries ago by monks in the north of England. Their beers are brewed in accordance with the purity laws, with no additives or preservatives. The Best Brown ale pours with a light tan, rocky head with large bubbles that sits atop a dark orange-amber beer. There is sweet, nutty malt in the nose with hint of toasted bread. This leads to the smooth, light palate that is slightly nutty with a roasted malt background. The finish is soft and subtle. A tasty session beer! If ale and good food be faults, may God have mercy on the wicked! Gritty McDuff
