The first Oktoberfest took place in 1810 on October 12th to celebrate the wedding of the Bavarian crown prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hidburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates. The fields were named Theresienwiese ( Theresa s fields ) in honor of the Crown Princess. To close the celebration, horse races were held in the presence of the Royal Family as an event celebrated as a festival for the whole of Bavaria. They decided to hold the horse races in the following year giving way to the tradition of the Oktoberfest. Spaten is the original Oktoberfest beer and was brewed in March 1871 from a recipe of the Vienna Brauerei Schwechat. It was served at the Oktoberfest in 1872 at the Festival Banquet Hall of hose Michael Schottenhamel and was so successful it was named The Oktoberfestbier ! It is lagered for three months and then tapped in September for the Oktoberfest celebration. Pouring with a creamy, tightly-beaded off-white head, it steadfastly stays on the sparkling amber beer until the last sip is taken. Aromatic malt pervades the nostrils and when contact is made there is urgency to take the first sip. Smooth as the most sensuous silk, the beer slinks over the palate leaving in its wake creamy, sweet, intense malt, nutty and freshly baked bread nuances. It reluctantly departs with a semi-sweet malt aftertaste. Imbibe Spaten, put on your leederhosen and dance with abandoned to the oompah band!
